Opening

David Lau:

Tonight's topic is about the possible future paths for a photographer — whether to remain an independent photographer like me, or to build a large team like you did, becoming the number one video team in Asia.

---

EssieChang:

From our video team's perspective, the working model is inherently different from photography. Video requires a fixed person at a specific position to capture complete moments — it's about continuous decisive moments. But photography is different: a single click captures a moment, and the work is done. So if you want to shoot great video and raise your prices, multi-camera shooting is naturally essential.

Starting from 1,500

EssieChang:

My very first booking was 1,500 RMB. I collaborated with DON on a high-value wedding shoot. That was my first time working as a photographer at a wedding, holding a 5D3 and experiencing wedding photography for the first time. After that, I started marketing online and got this 1,500 RMB booking. From this job onward, besides myself, I also brought three other people to the site.

Honestly, those people had no idea how to shoot video — zero relevant skills. But I still had them bring their gear to the site, thinking we'd capture whatever we could. I don't even know why I made that decision back then. Maybe I'm just naturally inclined toward teamwork, not someone who relies solely on individual ability. Unexpectedly, that single-camera booking ended up producing footage that looked almost like it came from a dual-camera setup.

The Journey of Leveling Up

EssieChang:

After that, I gradually developed. From several single-camera bookings at 1,500 RMB, I progressively upgraded to dual-camera at 2,000–3,000 RMB, then triple-camera around 5,000 RMB, quad-camera at 8,000 RMB, then quad-camera at over 20,000 RMB, all the way to my latest rate of 170,000 RMB.

Now my team's rates start at 30,000 RMB, with tiers at 60,000 and 70,000 RMB. Outside Guangdong province, we have unified pricing nationwide. That's how we leveled up step by step — like fighting monsters in a game.

Risk Resilience: The Core of the Wedding Industry

EssieChang:

I believe that if photographers want to excel in this work, they need to consider several core points: Weddings themselves are full of unexpected situations. As professionals, we also encounter various unforeseen circumstances — and weddings are the most taboo setting for accidents. For example, traffic delays, physical discomfort leading to work errors — these accidents are fatal to clients and absolutely affect the professional's future development and industry reputation.

Therefore, in wedding shooting, the concept of a single camera is inherently unreasonable. I even think that if clients only hire a single camera for their wedding, it's somewhat embarrassing — it shows they're not taking responsibility for their own wedding. If the budget is truly limited, only affording 800 RMB for a single camera, then they'll have to bear the corresponding shooting risks themselves.

The Value of Multi-Camera Setup

EssieChang:

As professionals in the industry, if you want to go far, build a reputation, achieve something, and truly love photography, videography, and wedding shooting, you must develop a mindset of building risk resilience.

Multi-camera shooting is, first and foremost, a dual responsibility — to yourself and to your clients. Secondly, multi-camera setups allow your work to present more shooting angles. No matter how skilled your shooting technique is, there will always be clients who don't like a single angle. Without footage from other angles, clients will be dissatisfied, ultimately affecting your reputation.

So at the end of the day, multi-camera is the foundation of this industry. Considering multiple perspectives — fee increases, risk resilience building, work quality, and industry talent cultivation — if you want to do this job well, a multi-camera team-based operational model is essential.

Core Summary

EssieChang:

From the very beginning until now, everything I've discussed revolves around the core concept of "risk resilience". Risk resilience means, on one hand, protecting your own career development from risks, and on the other hand, protecting your clients' wedding experience from risks. The fewer risks you encounter, the fewer pitfalls you fall into, and the faster and more steadily your career path can progress.
